Nè VLC nè Totem-xine riescono sempre a risolvere il problema da soli.

I computer sono bestie fantasiose e sembrano dare risposte molto diverse
a seconda  personali.
Ti consiglio di lanciare i programmi da terminale, fargli riprodurre il
DVD e leggere l'output del terminale per capire dov'è i problema.

Ad esempio:

$ vlc

... o magari sei già felicemente seduto sul divano a guardarti i tuoi
DVD? ;-)
